Sometimes a parent or non-parent has concerns for the well-being of a child in instances of abuse, neglect, endangerment or abandonment. Other times, parents are in agreement that the best interests of their child includes granting certain rights to other parties to care for their child for temporary or permanent durations.
Guardianships
Guardianships are legal actions which vest certain rights and responsibilities over a child or dependent adult (called a "ward") to a legal guardian. Guardianships can be granted for financial reasons or to protect the person; they can be temporary or permanent; and they can be granted with or without parental permission. To understand more of your options and whether guardianship is right for your situation, call or email to schedule a consult.
Adoptions
Unlike guardianships, adoptions require the termination of parental rights for any known parent. Adoptions permanently create rights and responsibilities to the child or individual in question, and permanently remove the rights and responsibilities of a biological parent. To understand whether adoption is right for you, call or email to schedule a consult.
